ABSTRACT

Diarrhea consists of the passage of watery and loose stools multiple times a day (usually more than 3), though specific definitions may vary when applied for distinct studies or populations. Diarrhea is among the most common medical conditions, and mild occurrences may not require medical attention. For health care providers, it is crucial to be familiar with this entity regardless of specialty and scope of practice.

Bacterial diarrhea, in specific, is a more severe condition with increased severity of symptoms. It is important to be familiar with this pathology and differentiate it from other, less severe, causes of diarrhea. Clinical decision making includes determining the appropriate use of diagnostic stool testing and determining when to treat with antibiotics, both of which are necessary with bacterial diarrhea. Most of the cases of bacterial diarrhea in the United States (U.S.) are foodborne.
