Abstract
Skin disorders occur in one-third of inpatients, and dermatologists play a significant role in their diagnosis and management. Although there remain barriers, there are substantial benefits to involving dermatology, including opportunities for more extensive interaction and teaching with consulting services. A broad range of dermatoses are diagnosed in the inpatient setting, including drug eruptions, atypical or disseminated infections, and unusual causes of cutaneous ulcers. Eruptions occurring in immunosuppressed patients, in particular, can pose particular challenges. Dermatologists can aid in diagnosis with physical examination and judicious use of skin biopsies.
