Patients' experiences of community IV therapy.

Abstract
AIM: To explore patients' experiences of receiving community intravenous therapy (CIVT) compared with traditional inpatient hospital care.
METHOD: The study used a qualitative descriptive methodology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight participants, transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed.
RESULTS: Five themes were identified: 'finances'; 'travelling'; 'hospital admission';'being at home'; and 'safety'.
DISCUSSION: The study revealed that participants felt privileged and valued when they were treated at home.CIVT allowed them the comfort of being in a familiar environment and the convenience of doing what they wanted, when they wanted.
CONCLUSION: This study concurs that patients do prefer to be treated at home rather than being admitted to secondary care. The findings from this study suggest that participants appreciated the opportunity to receive CIVT.
